How to show up in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT as a local business
AI assistants give short lists of businesses, not ten options. Here's how to make yours one of the names.
Short answer: AI tools recommend local businesses they can find, understand and trust. Make your business details consistent everywhere, write pages that answer customer questions directly, build steady reviews, earn mentions on local and industry sites, and add structured data. Then check regularly what the AI tools actually say about you.
Why this matters for local businesses
When someone asks an AI assistant "who's a good electrician in North Raleigh?", they usually get a short list of a few businesses with a sentence about each. There's no page two. If you're not in that list, the customer may never see you, even if you rank well in regular search.
Step 1: Get your facts straight everywhere
AI tools cross-check information across many sources. If your website says one phone number, Google says another and Yelp lists an old address, the tools have less confidence in you.
- Use the exact same business name, phone and address format on your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and the BBB.
- Describe your services and service area the same way in each place.
- Fix or remove duplicate and outdated listings.
Step 2: Write answer-first content
AI tools favor content that answers a question clearly and early. On each service page and article:
- Put the customer's question in a heading, such as "How much does a panel upgrade cost in Raleigh?"
- Answer it in two or three plain sentences right under the heading.
- Follow with the detail: factors, ranges, options and what to watch out for.
- Add a short FAQ section with the other questions customers ask.
This format helps traditional search too. It's the "AEO" part of AEO vs SEO.
Step 3: Build reviews that say something
Ratings matter, but so does what reviews say. Reviews that mention the specific service ("they replaced our HVAC system in Wake Forest in one day") give AI tools concrete, local details to repeat. Ask customers to mention what you did for them. Never offer incentives for reviews, which breaks Google's rules.
Step 4: Earn mentions on sites AI tools trust
AI answers often cite third-party pages: local news, "best of" lists, industry associations, chambers of commerce and partner websites. Practical ways to get there:
- Join the Raleigh chamber or industry associations that list members online.
- Sponsor local events and teams that link to their sponsors.
- Pitch a helpful tip or data point to local news and blogs.
- Ask suppliers and partners to list you as a recommended local provider.
Step 5: Add structured data
Schema markup labels your business type, services, hours and location in a format machines read without guessing. At minimum, add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage and FAQ schema to pages with FAQs. Our free schema generator creates the LocalBusiness code for you.
Step 6: Keep ranking in regular search
Many AI tools search the live web before answering, and pages that rank well are far more likely to be used. Strong SEO and local SEO aren't separate from AI visibility. They feed it.
Step 7: Check what AI says about you
Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (watch for an AI Overview) the questions your customers ask:
- "Best [service] in Raleigh"
- "[Service] near [neighborhood or town]"
- "How much does [service] cost in Raleigh?"
- "Is [your business name] good?"
Write down who gets named, how you're described and which sources are cited. The cited sources show you where to earn your next mention.
